Check the following site regarding the concept of the Looking Glass Self, a sociological theory developed by Charles Cooley.   A "looking glass" is an older term for mirror.   So this is a sociological theory explaining how society acts as a mirror and the reflection we see is what then determines how we perceive ourselves.
